Eighty years of artificial intelligence, drawn as a map
Eighty years of artificial intelligence, drawn as geography. Time runs roughly west to east. Borders, sizes and jokes are editorial, and they're meant to be argued with.
The painting was made with AI image models. The history on each placard is meant to be true, and recent claims are dated because they go stale quickly. Many details are affectionate teasing, not reporting, and the "why it matters" lines are our own opinion.
The perceptron, XOR network, GAN and sandbox agent train in your browser. Other demos use pretrained models, recorded attention weights or mathematical examples, with explanations beside them. Demo inputs stay on your device.
Arrow keys move through the journey. Escape closes a place. There's also a reading list of the papers behind the map, and the atlas: everything here in plain text, with sources.
This map needs JavaScript to pan and zoom, but the atlas has everything on it in plain text.
